What is a karate belt used for?
Karate belts are not functional, any good set of karate pants will be held up without a belt. Rather, karate belts are used to signify rank. Most colors signify the novice, or kyū levels of achievement. However black belts signify Dan, or master ranks. In some circumstances Red belts are given to extremely high ranking Dan masters.
What should I look for in a karate uniform?
The most important aspects of a karate uniform are light weight, comfort, and freedom of movement. You want a uniform that will not hamper your movement in any way and that you feel comfortable going through a full range of motion with all your limbs in. It is also important to have a uniform free of snagging hazards like external ties or buttons. Most modern karate uniforms have internal fastenings to prevent this.
What kind of equipment do I need to practice karate?
The most basic karate equipment is a healthy body and open mind. Once you’ve checked that of your list an outfit and floor mats are a good next step. If you are just beginning to learn karate punch and kick targets will help you refine your aim, but if you have already mastered a solid technique they may be unnecessary. If you are looking at sparring it is a good idea to get shin and wrist guards, as well as a padded helmet and a mouthpiece.
Where did karate originate?
The word karate originates from Japan. It means way of the empty hand. While the type of karate modernly practiced has roots in almost every eastern Asian country, the two largest influences come from China and Japan. The Chinese martial training, and later the Shaolin Buddhist monastic order formed the foundation upon which the Japanese built modern karate.
