Karate Clothing

Karate clothing covers anything worn while practicing karate. Because the martial arts are so steeped in tradition; there is a “traditional style” of clothing. Depending on how conservative your training facility is, the adherence to tradition may or may not be an issue for you.

If you have a contemporary facility that does not stress traditional styles, the main considerations to make in choosing karate clothing are comfort and maneuverability. You want light weight exercise apparel that allows you a full range of movement. You also want clothing without external buttons or other things that might catch on your opponent while sparring.

However if your training facility is a conservative place that values traditional apparel there is a more formal attire to practice in. Traditional karate clothing consists of an open jacket that is fastened internally and hangs down past the waist, as well as light pants that are cinched with a drawstring that is concealed under the jacket. This outfit presents very few opportunities for the opponent to grasp you by the clothing, and prevents most snags.
